Not many know that Mississippi is home to two subgenres of blues. Everyone knows the delta blues of the floodplains, but the highlands have their own music too. Hill-country blues is characterized by that fantastic persistent and hypnotic drone and a raw, lo-fi sound. R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough both epitomized electric hill-country blues, but unfortunately they began their short recording careers too late in life; both have passed away in the last several years. Seek out their music.
